One of the most popular Christian podcasts in 2024 was The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God, produced by Justin Brierley, who also wrote the accompanying book of the same name. Through a combination of interviews and long-form story telling, Brierley tells the story of how 'new atheism' grew old and people from a wide variety of academic disciplines begun to take Christianity serious again. It's a hugely encouraging podcast, and well worth listening to.
The Surprising Rebirth thesis was intentionally mainly anecdotal, but in recent months The Bible Society have published some evidence-based research, which also suggests the UK is seeing a 'Quiet Revival' of spiritual openness, particularly among 'Generation Z' (those born mid 1990s to early 2000s).
While it may be tempting to rush to hasty celebration on reading such data--which is no doubt fascinating-- it would be naïve to suggest that gospel ministry in the UK is suddenly easy, and that the nation is about to fall to its knees in repentance and faith in Jesus. However, our experience of life at Highfields Church in 2024, and summarised in glorious technicolour in this year's Annual Report, gives more than little evidence that the Lord continues to be at work, by his word, sometimes subtly, sometimes surprisingly. It feels like more young people and more internationals are part of our church than ever before. Praise God! And whenever God's word is at work, it will surely bring a harvest. It's what it always does.
As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11-10
