Gifted but Graceless

Studies in 1 Corinthians

A cosmopolitan city of over a quarter of a million people; centre of arts and culture; host to prestigious sporting events; a commercial crossroads; a melting pot of various spiritualities with entertainment and sex at the top of the agenda – where are we?  21st century Cardiff?   Actually it’s 1st century Corinth!

Paul’s first extant letter to the Christian community in Corinth, written about four years after he had founded the church in 51 AD on his second missionary journey, will form the back bone of our studies on Sunday mornings this year.  Paul’s responses to the reports he had received about the church in Corinth as well as the questions the Christians in Corinth had sent him are highly relevant to us today.

Issues such as the relationship between Christians and their surrounding pagan culture, divisions within the church, the ordering of church worship, the use of spiritual gifts, matters of personal morality, sex and marriage, and basic Christian beliefs like the resurrection of Jesus have contemporary significance for us all as we seek to be and do church in our 21st century setting.
